Backlash as Kendall Jenner covers Vogue India

After her recent controversial Pepsi ad, more backlash follows Kendall Jenner as she features on the May 2017 cover of Vogue India; 10 year celebration edition.

Vogue India chose to use a white model to celebrate India and its culture, consequently raising concerns for many over cultural appropriation, and diversity in the fashion industry. It also brings to the forefront the ideology of fair skin as the pinnacle of beauty, which only adds to the skin bleaching, beauty craze that India has, and is currently facing.

Angry viewers took to twitter and social media to voice their concerns:

Here is what Vogue India had to say about their cover:

“In the last 10 years, Vogue India has had only 12 international covers, including Kendall Jenner, in 2017. Therefore, statistically, 90 per cent of our covers are Indian! And we are proud of that.

India has given the world so many beautiful faces to admire. After all, we are Vogue, an international brand, and we want to give the love back by featuring some of the best international celebrities on our covers. Occasionally! 🙂”
