Beyoncé A new ‘Formation’!

With Super Bowl just passed now a matter of hours ago, Beyoncé has used the time shrewdly to share her brand new song ‘’Formation’’.

When it comes to political commentary and strong social justice message, commercial music goes into hiding. That’s why I was so excited to see B using her considerable influence in bringing a range of issues that have been haunting the US over the last 18 months or so to light.

One thing some people like to forget about Michael Jackson was that he was brought that he attempted to shine a light on the injustices in our world. Beyoncé looks thank god to be following in his footsteps somewhat.

Produced by Mike Will Made-it and filmed in New Orleans post hurricane Katrina, the first images we see are houses halfway under water. Beyoncé lays on top of a nearly sunk police car. This imagery immediately points towards the police violence against black and brown folk that has been captured on mobile phones nationwide.

You’re met immediately with power of this one, bass-pumping and 808 heavy in its melodic nature. Beyoncé goes through her roots literally as she sings ‘’my daddy Alabama, momma Louisiana, you mix that Negro with that creole make a Texas bama’’. It’s clear that B is banging the drum for black pride and beauty as this song is steeped in the culture as the video goes to the beauty shop where a number of weaves are seen on display.

Then it pans to the church scene where Beyoncé is dressed in all black with her congregation. The attire they wear is steeped in historical context and you get a tingle as Beyoncé recreates the spirit of a community in one image.

Again Beyoncé brings it hard with the dance chorography with her girls as she gets into the grove in such a fashion. They take over what looks to be an empty gymnasium and absolutely tear it up. Formation indeed as B and her crew take it outside to a parking lot. This time cleverly shot through the lens of a camcorder which gives it the feel of somebody just lucky enough to stumble across the girls. Innovative is a cheap word to describe her talents. One the best to ever do it is a fair description to lay at her table.
