Already drawing comparisons with the likes of FKA twigs, M.I.A. and Christine and the Queens, Frenchnewcomer SÔNGE’s slow-burning trip-hop and futuristic R&B permeates further influences from Björk,Kendrick Lamar and CocoRosie. Now she’s set to introduce herself to UK audiences with the release of her debut single ‘I Come From Pain’.

‘I Come From Pain’ sets SÔNGE’s distinctive vocal – somehow exotic and otherworldly, yet infused with a timeless bluesy undertone – to a minimalist production of whirring synths and skittering beats which flourishes into a dark-hued and enigmatic ambience. It’s the ideal calling card for an artist with an adventurous streak and a love for off-kilter narratives.

“It’s the story of somebody who is looking for a place to stay – he doesn’t know how to be with other people and he doesn’t know where he really belongs,” she explains. “It’s a kind of spiritual searching of his true self. He’s in a forest in the moonlight. An animal asks, ‘Where do you come from?’ and he says, ‘I come from pain.’” The answer to where ‘pain’ is lies tantalisingly just out of reach: a mini-mystery to help to lure you into SÔNGE’s alternative universe.

The accompanying video only heightens that sense of the uncertain by depicting SÔNGE as some kind of deity for those who surround her in a compound which contrasts its future-tech design with religious-inspired imagery. It was directed by Zhang + Knight (Skott, Noga Erez, ATO) and filmed in an abandoned military boathouse in Kiev in the Ukraine.

‘I Come From Pain’ features on SÔNGE’s self-titled debut EP which is out now on Parlophone France/ WMG.
