Chelcee Grimes: Meet RCA’s hottest new pop signing

She sings, she writes, she shoots and she scores… professional footballer turned songwriter, turned singer Chelcee Grimes is RCA’s hottest new pop signing and she’s ready to take over the world.   Niyi catches up with her at Sony’s headquarters in London.

Written in an intense 10 minute burst of creativity, Chelcee’s debut single is called ‘Just Like That’. The track is a swaggering and suggestive pop gem about ‘wanting to get home for some sexy time’ – as Chelcee says; ‘It’s not one for my mum to listen to’.  The video, directed by Charlotte Rutherford, was shot in Joshua Tree, California, and sees Chelcee causing chaos in a trailer park with some randy pensioners.

She said: “The lyrics are quite sexual and thought it would be a unique take to get them to be the ones acting out instead of me!! It’s such a fun, tongue-in-cheek video and is the perfect way for people to hear the song for the first time.”

Citing P!nk, Bruno Mars, Avril Lavigne, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga as her influences, 25 year old Chelcee has her sights set high. Having already written tracks for the likes of Kylie MinogueDua LipaOlly MursThe Saturdays and Louisa Johnson (the single ‘So Good’ has gone gold), Chelcee now wants to change the current pop trend. She said: “There aren’t many straight up pop stars playing instruments at the moment, so I wanted to break the mould. If you watch Gaga, she’ll play piano and then do a dance break – that’s so fucking cool.”

As well as her musical talents, Chelcee plays professional football for Fulham. She said “I’m making my best music and get to play football every week. It’s my perfect combination and I couldn’t be happier.”

But it hasn’t been all smooth sailing and as the saying goes, ‘if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again’ as Liverpool born Chelcee had her first taste of being signed (to RCA no less) in 2012 aged 19. But before any music could come out, she lost her deal. She said of the experience: “I look back at that time in such a blur. I went from being on top of the world at having a deal, to thinking my career was over before it had even begun.  But I am so glad I didn’t put any music out then, it wasn’t my time… I didn’t know who I was as an artist. I went away, learned my craft and decided to give it another go. Signing back to RCA was like getting back together with an ex – but I really clicked with the new team here and knew I had to give it a go. There’s unfinished business and I’ve never been more ready.”
