Meet music’s new rebel singer-songwriter Chloë Black

We meet Australian born singer Chloe Black for a quick 1 on 1.  This rebel has already supported Maverick Sabre and Rag’N’Bone Man and is working with the brains behind Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy”, Arcade. Her first release “27 Club” won her first place at the top of Hype Machine with over 100,000 plays in its first week and now, she’s the soundtrack to ITV Drama, ‘DCI Banks’.

Q. So to KICK it all off who is Chloe Black? in three words only

I am a rebel

Q.Who did you grow up listening to and what are you listening to right now?

I grew up listening to a lot of jazz because my dad played jazz piano. My parents named me after a little known Elton John song. As a teen I listened to a lot of 90’s alternative stuff. Fiona Apple was the catalyst for my songwriting. Right now I’m listening to SZA, Cigarettes after Sex, and a lot of foreign language pop songs from the sixties. French, Italian, Japanese etc.

SZA

Q. If you could work with any other Producer/ Rapper/ Singer on a record who would it be and why?

Kanye. I think he is fearless as a producer, and tracks like FML really speak to me. It’s avant garde and gut wrenching.

KANYE

Q. You have been given the nickname ‘The White Witch’ what other nicknames are you known by? My family call me Bunny.

Q. Are you political at all or are you all about the music?

I’m political in the sense that I care deeply about human rights issues and am feminist as f**k.

Q. Tell us about the track ‘Waterbed’, how did it come about?

Producer/writer Rob Kleiner and I had worked together in Los Angeles before I moved to London for 4 years. ‘Waterbed’ was born from our first session working together again. We had no idea what to expect because we had both changed so much in those 4 years. I think the complete lack of expectations allowed us to just play around and experiment. I had the title in mind when we started but nothing else.

All the vocals were recorded incredibly roughly. I sang them sitting beside Rob as we were writing and recorded them on a microphone made from an old yellow payphone (flagg audio they’re called). We had planned to re-do them properly but then sort of fell in love with the grunginess and roughness of the telephone vocal.

Q. We have a few easy questions for you now- Pick two Celebrities to be your parents- Who?

Well I’d say I’d pick David Lynch as my dad…but I actually want him to be my daddy so…

John Waters and Divine. Ilana Glazer as my aunt who lives with us.

LLANA GLAZER

Q. Rate yourself(s) on a scale of 1-10?

It goes to 11.

Q. Whats your go too emoji?

🍒

Q. Who is your style icon?

I have a lot of style icons!! Right now though I’d say Ginger McKenna from Casino and/or Elvira Hancock from Scarface.

Q. If Hollywood made a movie about your life who would you like to see play the lead role as you?

Anthony Hopkins or a talking squirrel.

ANTHONY HOPKINS

Q.If You could trade places with another person for a week- famous or non famous/living or dead / real or fictional who would it be?

Donald Trump. I’d spent 6 days reversing all the vile things he’s done, fire all the fusty hateful old white men, donate all of his money to charity and then on the 7th day I’d kill myself and Mike Pence in some fantastically weird sexual suicide pact where we leave a note bequeathing our positions to Hilary Clinton and Mykki Blanco. In my fantasy you can bequeath presidency. Or if he didn’t exist I’d be Monica Bellucci and I wouldn’t leave the house.

Q. Any gigs/events planned for this / next year?

I just finished a self-directed/edited music video for Waterbed and am lining up the next releases so unfortunately gigging will have to wait until the New Year but I’m very excited to start playing again with some new material.
