Hip Hop has always been known for its political social commentary from its inception from the likes Afrika Bambaataa, Public Enemy, 2PAC & Nas all the way to more current rappers such as Kendrik Lamar & J. Cole to mention just a few. Hip Hop has taken a slight detour in recent times with the focus more on materialism than meaning.
Arguably the genres most recognisable worldwide star in the last 20 years Eminem has used his massive platform to address the horror that is the current incumbent president Donald J Trump. The world has never been tenser with this loose cannons feet being firmly placed under the Whitehouse desk.
Dressed in all black minus some white trainers he embodies the spirit of the late Huey P Newton as he absolutely dissects Trump with his wizardly wordplay and scathing delivery. Over 4 minutes are dedicated as he references the dangers of nuclear war. The fact that since Trumps been in office racism has been his soup of the day as he’s aimed tweets at protesting black sports stars instead of dealing the root cause.
Eminem eloquently picks up on Trumps not so subtle forms of distraction such as the tweets mentioned above, instead of focusing on the humanitarian crisis’s in places like Puerto Rico due to the recent hurricanes or the urgent need for gun reform.
Eminem captures the essence of his message with skilful rhetorical cunningness by concluding that Trump is the worst representation of America possible. This is brave from Eminem as he has much to lose. The way he stands for his fellow Americans needs to be praised to the heavens. This hopefully will spark a new wave of political activism from prominent rappers and artists in general. Lord knows we need everybody to take active steps to reverse this worldwide threat.
