On 12 September, Céline Dion opened her 2026–2027 Paris residency at Paris La Défense Arena. It was her first full concert in more than six years.
The 35,000-capacity show carried a significance that went beyond its scale. Since Dion revealed her diagnosis with stiff-person syndrome, questions have remained about whether she would be able to return to live performance. In Paris, she answered them in her own language: through the music.
An emotional opening in Paris
Dion began the concert with the French-language favourite On ne change pas. Its title translates as “we do not change,” making it a fitting choice for an artist returning after such a long and difficult absence.
She paused during the show to acknowledge the moment and the audience who had waited for it.
“Finally, it’s amazing we are all together. I made a promise to come back and to be back on stage,” she said.
Dion’s Courage World Tour was interrupted in 2020. She later disclosed that stiff-person syndrome, a rare neurological condition, was affecting her movement and her ability to sing.
Her performance from the Eiffel Tower during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games marked a striking return to public performance. This residency, however, is the first time since 2020 that she has taken on a complete concert programme.
A setlist spanning both sides of her catalogue
The show was divided into four acts, moving between Dion’s French and English-language music rather than treating them as separate chapters.
The setlist included Because You Loved Me, Dans un autre monde, Courage and It’s All Coming Back to Me Now. She also performed Dansons, one of her latest releases, bringing new material into a show filled with songs closely tied to her legacy.
An operatic performance of La Wally became one of the night’s most theatrical moments. Dion later returned for an encore drawn from her French catalogue.
Her ability to move between pop ballads, French chanson and opera has always set her apart. The Paris show brought all three into the same space, without losing the emotional directness that has made her music resonate across languages and generations.
Willo Perron brings a contemporary edge to the production
Creative director Willo Perron designed the production, building the stage around large monolithic structures that opened and shifted during the performance.
The design was imposing but controlled. Instead of filling the arena with constant visual noise, it framed Dion and allowed the performance to remain the focus. French director Thibaut Grevet created the video imagery displayed across the stage’s large LED screens. His visuals added scale and atmosphere while helping each act develop its own identity.
The show’s musical direction came from Scott Price, who has worked with Dion for 15 years. That long-standing creative relationship gave the performance a familiar musical foundation, even as the production introduced a new visual world around it.
French couture becomes part of the performance
Fashion was treated as part of the show’s visual language rather than a series of unrelated costume changes.
Creative adviser Annie Horth worked with leading French fashion houses to develop custom looks for Dion. Sculptural silhouettes and couture detailing matched the scale of the arena while retaining the precision and elegance associated with her personal style.
The opening look, a dramatic black gown with a fitted bodice and pleated architectural skirt, established that direction immediately. It felt theatrical enough for the stage, but still recognisably Céline.
Music and fashion have often met in Dion’s public image, particularly during her later career. In Paris, that relationship was built directly into the production.
A new chapter for Céline Dion
The concert did not avoid the emotion surrounding Dion’s return, but it was not defined only by her health.
Its strongest moments came from seeing her back in control of the music, the stage and her own story. There was no attempt to disguise how much the evening meant to her or to the audience. That openness gave the show its weight.
Paris offered a clear picture of where Céline Dion stands in 2026: an artist with a four-decade catalogue, a sharp visual identity and an audience still willing to meet her on an arena-sized scale.
