John Boyega at his best in Netflix: ‘Imperial Dreams’

#DistractFilm:  Netflix definitely have created their own canvass to distribute. Landing big stars to their roster almost daily is more than an achievement.

John Boyega, fresh off the success of his landmark Star Wars role is a heaven of coup. Boyega, plays a young man called Bambi who has recently been released from prison. We’re immediately thrown head first into his dysfunctional family life.

Bambi has a young son who’s being taking care of by his uncle Shimp, who first appears to have a good heart. Only to find out within minutes that in fact he’s eager to have Bambi involved in Gangster move that on one would be rewarding but at the same time land him back behind bars. Bambi politely declines and is kicked out of the house by his uncle (not so nice after all).

He’s forced to live in his car with his son. Bambi, attempts to make the best of this situation. While this is happening another drama is playing out as his cousin is on the run from police and a rival gang over a shooting he’s believed to be involved in. This does not play out well as a tragedy soon ensues.

Bambi is told to get a job by his parole officer. We then witness the struggles of a newly released ex convict as he attempts to integrate back into the system by getting a job. This highlights the American nightmare in startling terms.

‘Innovative camera work lends its hand to this Heartbreaking tale of a young man trying free his demons’

This real to life flick stands alone with its clever soulful sound providing the warmth throughout the mostly icy environment.

You really do believe Boyega as Bambi in this flick. He’s a changed man with a dream of becoming a writer. With criminal influences all around him, you actually feel the pressure building scene by scene. Will he be sucked in or will he succeed.

A must watch for Netflix Viewers and Boyega lovers.
