Raury : The Future Of Hip Hop Music?

Raury Deshawn Tullis, better known by his stage name Raury. Hailing from Atlanta, Georgia. Which has spawned a number of hit rappers from Andre 3000, TI to those super cool chicks that made up TLC.

Raury originally caught my eye when he featured on The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part1 soundtrack, with a song called “Lost Souls”. He was also featured on the cover of XXL for the 2015’s Freshman Class.

Born in 1996, the 19 year old cannot be placed in a box and you just can’t label him this or that as he simply cross genres in the most natural and triumphant way. I wish there was more artists with such a true spirit.

Atlanta the state which arguably birthed trap music and who’s economy is largely reliant on the strip club scene. It’s fascinating that Raury does not reflect that scene but goes completely against the grain.

Influenced mainly by his elder brother and his mother who between them had a very diverse music collection with such artists as Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Sade & Mary J Blige and Mariah Carey. In an interview on American radio station Power 106, Raury declared his admiration for 2PAC ‘’ He was the only rapper that did more than make music’’.

Deeper than an 808 pattern and gun talk Raury maybe classified under the alternative genre but when asked by radio host Charlemagne https://youtu.be/7DCqnykIVdA if he considers himself a rapper he nonchalantly describes himself as ‘’hip hop’’ he is breaking precedents and boundaries that attempt to pigeon hole the art form.

A fluent guitarist with a strong sense of identity add that with a Bob Marley type of message in his music. I’ve been crying out for a real revolutionary music and this makes for the excitement that is the young artist by the name of Raury.

No less than Kanye West has been moved by his music and flew him out to LA to just link up and chill out. Rumours are that some ghost writing has been done for Yeezus and an appearance on his future yet untitled album seems very likely indeed.

‘’All we Need’’ Is Raury’s first studio album an I can tell you it’s absolutely astounding with guest appearances from Big K.R.I.T, RZA who just add to the overall class of the record. The title track is the stand out track for me with its eclectic mix of soul, rap & folk. It tells the story of the world which is driven by so many negative factors when all we need is love. It’s his simplicity which makes this track one of pure genius.
